Users can post a notice that they are looking for specific academic material. Others, who have privileged access to the material required, can share it with one click.
This service depends on the willingness of students who have access to well-stocked libraries to now and then look up some articles to share with less privileged students from around the globe.
A similar service is available between libraries as "Interlibrary loan" or ILL-service. However, these schemes are slow and expensive.
